Sharing Options Popularity

One of the most exciting things about running so many viral campaigns, as we do here at Oddcast, is the aggregate data we collect. So moving forward, we will share data points highlights, here on this blog.  The first installment is data about sharing.

When a user publishes or shares a user generated media creation with others, the sharing popularity breakdown is:

Get URL     34%
Send Email     30%
Post to a Social Network     24%
Grab Embed Code     12%

Let us know if you have questions, comments or special requests about additional data points you are curious about.

Hi Adi,

I'm a big fan of all your viral campaigns !

It would be interesting to know what are the impacts of each sharing method in term of audience on your mini-site.

If we take Trek Yourself for example, what is the popularity breakdown of each traffic source:
Search engine, Email, Social Network, Blog or grab embed code.

Adi

Hey Jean,

Thanks for the kind words!

While we can't give out client-specific information, I can give you a more general answer:

For most campaigns, we see between 30% and 50% of users coming to the site via a viral method (emails, postings, grabbed URLs, etc), with the percentage increasing as more sharing options are enabled. We tend to see only a small percentage of traffic coming from search, as most non-viral traffic comes from links on other sites, banners, news stories, etc.

Grabbed URLs are certainly the most popular option, accounting for approximately 20% of visitors in campaigns where this functionality is present. It's hard to give overall numbers for how much traffic each option is responsible for, as it varies greatly given the campaign: for example, the percentage of traffic from email is greater in campaigns where email is the only method of sharing.

Best,

Adi

Hi Adi,

Thank you for the answer. So almost 50 % of trafic of your media creation come from your sharing options ! that's a very good score.

I'm a little bit curious ;-) When they talk about your creations on TV, big pikes come from search engines or direct trafic ?

That must be funny to see the keyword people have understood : do they remember the name of the product (trek yourself) or just what the product does (become mr spock).
