Steve, writing on the P+s blog ARTS + science, posted some thoughts on why we're still in business, or rather, what keeps him and millions of others interested in and interacting with avatars.  It all comes down to the three S's - simple, sociable, and shareable - described by Jason in his recent post.

We think they're both spot on: if it's not easy enough that *anyone* can find it, personalize it, and share it with friends, it just won't take off.
